In 2012, almost all kinds of ni-lactam antibiotics (except those in the patent period) could be produced in China with very low cost. Penicillin production ranked first in the world, and a large number of products were exported to the international market. Cephalosporins are largely self-sufficient in antibiotics and can be exported in part. In 2012, China was able to produce all the intermediates compatible with dai-lactam antibiotics by itself, and all the side chain intermediates could be produced and exported in large quantities, except that the mother nucleus 7-aca and 7-adca of semi-synthetic antibiotics needed to be imported in part. Take phenylacetic acid, the main supporting intermediate of ms-lactam antibiotics, as an example. There are nearly 30 phenylacetic acid manufacturers in China, with the total annual capacity of about 20,000 tons. But most are small, with the biggest producing 2,000 tonnes a year and most others producing hundreds of tonnes. In 2003, the total demand for phenylacetic acid in China was about 14,000 tons, and the consumption structure was: penicillin G accounted for 85%, other medicines for 4%, spices for 7%, pesticides and other fields accounted for 4%. With the development of domestic perfume, medicine, pesticide and other industries, the demand for phenylacetic acid will increase further. It is estimated that by 2005, China's pharmaceutical industry will consume about 14,000 tons of phenylacetic acid, 500 tons of pesticides and 2,000 tons of spices.
